Since its inception in 1988, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance has worked throughout the United Kingdom and internationally, producing and touring dance works by its Artistic Director and Choreographer, Shobana Jeyasingh.  The dance itself is ground-breaking and contemporary in style and draws on many traditional forms and influences such as Ballet or Bharata Natyam, a centuries-old Asian classical dance form. The company has received three Digital Dance Awards, two Time Out Dance Awards and the London Music and Dance Award. The 2007 piece Faultlines is currently part of the GCSE syllabus for dance in the UK.  Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company exists to challenge narrow perceptions of dance and, in particular, British Asian dance and identity. This is done through the creation and touring of challenging theatrical and site-specific performances and through the delivery of educational projects, workshops and resources. The work explores contemporary issues and themes that revolve around the East/West and tradition/modernity axis. A hybridisation of movement languages and other disciplines is used as a vehicle for exploration across cultures.
