  Class Description   CLASSES

‘Dance is movement, and it’s opposite, in time and space’ – Merce Cunningham

Drawing on his years of experience with Richard Alston Dance Company, James uses his innate sense of musicality to explore phrasing through movement.

This dynamic Cunningham influenced technique class will strengthen and increase awareness of the body. Starting with a series of simple back exercises, the class work then develops in to longer travelling sequences, exploring a fresh approach to direction and timing.

This is a general level class suitable for any willing participants with a basic level of dance technique and form which will leave you feeling inspired and invigorated.

  Minimum age: 16

Monday  (Start 7th May)
Contemporary – Cunningham Technique

20.00 – 21.30

James graduated from Central School of Ballet in 2006 with a BA (hons) degree in Professional Dance. After joining Northern Ballet that same year he went on to work with Peter Schaufuss Ballet in Denmark and Theater Ulm in Germany.

In 2013 James returned to the UK to join Richard Alston Dance Company (RADC). Since then he has toured extensively in Europe and the USA performing in a wide variety of work by Alston and associate choreographer Martin Lawrance.

As of 2017, James is a faculty teacher at Central school of Ballet for the Prep and Pre-senior students. He regularly leads workshops for the Essential Alston education program and is now a regular Company teacher for RADC. He has taught Professional classes at the Place, and has worked with LCDS and the Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) scheme.

In January 2017 he premiered his latest choreographic work, ‘Symbiotic’ at Resolution Dance festival in the Robin Howard theatre.
